Tasked with redesigning the long-live Mines Alumni Magazine our challenge was to hold on to the history of it while designing a modern, captivating publication. While tasked with a magazine design, we were essentially rebranding the entire format. Over time the look and feel of the publication had become dated and so was less appealing to younger alumni. Not wanting to risk alienating mature alumni the challenge was in finding a happy medium in the design aesthetic so that both recent graduates and more established professionals would feel a sense of pride in the magazine, and their alma mater.

We began by modernizing the design so that it would appeal to more recent graduates. Implementing this fresh look, in a reserved manner, ensured the magazine would continue to appeal to established alumni. We then began building the layout around the content. As with any print publication there’s an element of problem solving and putting together a puzzle of images, captions and texts to not only ensure it looks great, but fits aesthetically, and is consistent.

The new design was well received by the college and Alumni. For some extra “feel good,” we received unsolicited praise directly from Alumni outreach upon the publishing of the first new issue. We design each quarterly issue of the Alumni magazine along with other academic publications for the college.
